I believe this is a generic focusing issue, ie not limited to Pentax. Somebody else (don't recall who, sorry!) mentioned in the last week that wide angled lenses are difficult to focus because the contrast changes so little there's almost no information for the AF system to chew on.

OTOH, wide angles also give you deeper DoF, so you win some you lose some.
