I've had multi-focals for the last ten years. Three years ago, I needed
new ones and my optician had just changed his supplier for multi-focals.
Used to be Essilor and then it was Hoya. Tried them on and... yikes!
Like looking through some cheap Taiwanese wide-angle converter. Also,
the useable zone in the centre of the glasses was much smaller. I
couldn't even drive with them.  

He suspected an error in production and had them exchanged. Same result.
Eventually he agreed to take them back and order a pair of new glasses
from Essilor. For my next, the current ones, he didn't even try to
suggest Hoya... ;-)
