i would have gotten my license in 1976 (in Maine), but for some reason my
stepfather gave up on me after a couple of rounds of a parking lot in our Saab
96; actually in 1974 (at 13, a complete novice) my uncle put me behind the
wheel of an International Scout heading downhill on a one-track mountain road
just below treeline (so that something would catch us if we slid off the
downhill side)
i tried again once in about 1981, but it wasn't until 1991, at age 30, that i
got my license, this time in a Saab 95 (station wagon version of the 96);
despite the late start i think i'm a solid driver; i enjoy snow and mountain
roads (and downtown Boston, New York & San Francisco as an occasional thrill)
