I've been meaning to compare these two lenses, since I own them both,
but have been too busy to try. Tonight I made my first side by side
prints. Physically, the Schneider Componon-S seems to be well made,
although it's all plastic. It's broader than the Nikkor and has a
larger thread. The Nikkor is beautiful. It's mostly chrome plated metal
and is quite heavy. It's not as wide as the Schneider and the thread is
smaller.
I printed a 6x7 neg of a fellow on the Venice CA boardwalk. This guy
does live television. He has an empty television cabinet, and he does
puppet shows from behind the cabinet. The front of the cabinet has a lot
of typography, and the scene has a lot of different gray values, so I
though it might make a decent test.
The first surprise was that the two lenses are not identical in
focal length. The Nikkor prints more of the neg on a given sheet of
paper. I believe that means its longer. The small print on the front of
the television cabinet is easily readable on both prints. If I had to
declare a winner in respect to sharpness, I couldn't. In other words,
both prints are quite sharp. This is true both in the center of the
frame and at the extreme edges. Neither print shows any noticeable light
fall-off. The SC-S print is slightly darker, but I may have souped it a
few seconds longer. I'm going to have to attempt another test tomorrow.
But it looks like it's going to be hard to choose between the two
lenses.
