I don't think that the shadows detract, however if you did want a shot without 
them, is there some way you could light the paper from the back? Have it on top 
of a box with a speedlight aimed to shine through?

I did end up getting a sheet of translucent plastic to put inside as a 
"seamless background" though paper works nearly as well.
