Oh, no doubt about it being a legitimate topic for discussion. I am just
more than a little surprised that it should cause some of the 'spirited'
responses that it has, so far. Perhaps someone should put type numbers on
these lenses so that one could state "this picture was taken with the 400mm
f/2.8 type one", so that, when we know, we can determine which variation is
superior and which should merit higher bidding on ebay. Boz could add the
type numbers to his website and Gerjan could revise his book. In no time,
we could attain the status of the RUG or LUG as pertains to pointing out
variations and then Pentax collectors who thought they had completed their
collections would be given new goals to spur them on once again.

It's a very worthwhile pastime.

Subject: Re: Pentax Big Glass

Well, Len, I really can't speak for all the others, but when one
obtains a rather large hunk of glass and aluminum involving a great
investment of funds (and sometimes a great investment of time, too,
if finding one becomes difficult), and the lens turns out to come in
a different color than one expected, it is an important (even if
perhaps not a significant) issue. Certainly, the color of the
barrel has no effect on optics or images. However, it ~is~ a matter
for some of us Pentaxers, and the PDML ~would~ seem to be the proper
place to discuss this (and it certainly is more on-topic than some
of the threads here on the PDML - <g>).
