But we each have our own interpretation of what "photo books" might mean. For
me it includes the theoretical and practical discussions of photography (e.g.,
the two-volume Ansel Adams guide to basic techniques of photography, the John
Shaw books on macro, nature etc., Feininger on color, etc.) It also includes
the nuts-and-bolts technical stuff (e.g., Kodak darkroom manual, Evening's
Lightroom book, Tomosy's books on camera maintenance and repair, etc.) Then
there are picture books, photo books which feature photos from one person or
from a genre, or which tell stories like the Life collections. This later
category is probably what Bob is thinking about and what most of us have keyed
on. But I can certainly see Mike's point, and I must say that most of my photo
books are about photography rather than presentations of other's photography.

Sticking to the picture-books subcategory, I have re-thought my first response
to Bob's question. I had listed a W. Eugene Smith collection, but on further
reflection I find my self torn between three or four. In their current order:
a. Juan Buhler - Street Photographs (2006)
b. Dorothea Lange (an Aperture monograph in their Masters of Photography series)
c. One of the three Ansel Adams collections I have.

Each of these, as with the previously mentioned W. Eugene Smith work, presents
collections of photographs each of which is compelling in its own right but
which, taken together, illustrate a strong style and consistent world view. And
it is this later aspect that I think I can learn from.
