What I don't understand is why the optical stabilization would not
work with film DSLRs.
Bah! SLRs, not DSLRs. I hate it when my fingers are two seconds
faster than my brain.

Film SLRs don't have power contacts for the OS or HSM.

IDK. Is the power zoom contact on film SLRs the same one used to power OS and/or HSM on the DSLRs?

If so, I expect the film SLRs may be able to power OS or HSM, but may not have all the contacts needed to control them ... like a car with a good motor, but no steering.
