I think this is a memorable image also. However, I think that a signficant reason that it works is that we are "in on the joke" (know before viewing it that the photographer/camera is in the picture). If you miss the camera (well-placed to be unobtrusive) and think it is a shot from an external photographer, I think it loses something significant.
