What does he mean from under my coat?  I can't quite visualize what
he's doing?  If he's under his coat, how does he get the picture?

Pulled his coat up over his head and got right up against the glass so the coat would block the inside office lights from reflecting off the glass.

Same thing as where you use a rubber lens hood and stick it right up against the glass. Or this dohickey:
