[Paul and Frits are agreeing to dislike different 28-80mm lenses. <g>]
I too had and junked the FA 28-80/3.5-5.6 (the silver one that Paul has.) I accepted it when I bought my -5n because I wanted something that would autofocus that weekend and that was what was available. I never really got on with it, though, and when I found a used FA 28-70/4 at a sensible price, it fell into disuse and is no longer with me. That's something you might consider, Paul, if you don't want to pay the high price of the 24-90. The 28-70 is discontinued but seems still to be available new in places. Picture quality is far better than the 28-80, and it's smaller too - and black. It's not pleasant to focus manually, but I find it useful at outdoor social events where I'm mainly using AF and the zoom range is useful. The constant aperture helps too. It would make a good starter zoom if you plan to add more specialized lenses to your collection. If you plan to make this your main lens, the 24-90 would probably give you more options.
