A shot from the head of the table of the Anatomical Theater of the University 
of Padua, first used in 1595, and the first in Europe.  It is preserved but no 
longer in use.  In its heyday, hundreds of medical students occupied the 
circular tiers above, leaning over to see the dissection.

Dissection of cadavers was legal in the Republic of Venice, as long as the 
remains were given a proper burial afterwards.
