There is your problem. Jam the leader into the needles, wind the film one
time to get the top sprocket engaged, then pull cassette across the camera
and push it into the well. It keeps tension on the film, keeping it engaged
on the sprockets. If you do it right you don't have to fiddle. I admit it
take just a little practice, but then you can load the camera very quickly
without fumbling, and you use the minimum leader possible if you insist on
getting those extra few frames from you film. I admit, I don't consider film
the expensive part, when I have finished a subject I pull the film and have
it processed. It is cheap with print film because they don't charge you for
the unprinted shots. Now, with slide film, I have often regretted doing it
that way.

use Shel/Bill/Aaron's methods where you put the leader in before the film
canister. It is awkward to handle right handed for me and demands extra
slack be pulled from the canister. So instead, I drop the canister in and
pull the minimum I can across the shutter and try to stick it in the magic
needles.

I go toward the outside edge of the camera and jam into the magic needles,
when I wind the film I get a hook at the end of the leader that grabs the
magic needles and things seem to work better. If I go toward the inside
edge (shutter side) of winding spool and jam into the magic needles, I get
more trouble and winding failures.

too smooth and just don't grab well.<<
