Quoting "[email protected]" <[email protected]>:

I just checked and the current Labour government took power in 2007. The liberals ruled for eleven uninterrupted years before that. It seems that this poor person's woes can be blamed on more than just the current Labour government.

For all the examples of failures of socialized medicine I can point out more failures of a so-called free market system, but what's the use?

The issue that Bob raised is whether seniors (so many of whom are on small fixed incomes) should pay for prescription medication. And I agree with Bob that they shouldn't have to.

There. Not arguing with anyone about it because no one will change my mind about it.

Btw, Ann, glad things went as well as they did. Sounds like things are treatable and that's gold.

I agree totally - especially your best wishes to Ann.

Actually, though, I think John was referring to the Queensland State Labor Government rather than the Feds. State governments run the hospital systems in Australia, but as health is jointly funded by both Feds and State, there's plenty of candidates on both Left and Right to throw rocks at.

And here in Queensland one pensioner has waited 15 years for cataract surgery, and has now been told he is off the waiting list because his case is considered "non-urgent". It took him 9 years to even get on the list - now he has to find $4000 for private treatment -
this from our "caring " Labor government...

But --
the diagnoses overall is that I really don't need a new prescription -
cataract surgery probably a year or more down the road, peripheral
vision not too bad. The glaucoma is Open Angle. Have to take drops
two times a day... Trusopt 5ml.

Dan - is that what you take?

Looks like it will cost $45 a month if I get it at K-mart If anyone
knows what Costco would charge it might be worth my joining

that sums up in one sentence why Europe is better than the USA. Over here someone at your time of life would not pay anything - I was quite shocked to read that sentence.

Still, I'm glad to hear that things aren't too bad for you.
