I believe I was the one who originally suggested starting them out with disposable film cameras.

My reasoning was:

. Low initial investment before the parents find out whether the kid is going to stick with photography; because ...
. Kids lose stuff;
. Simple controls - shutter & winding wheel (& maybe a button to turn on the built in flash)- allow the emphasis to be on light & composition.

I expect that once you get them through the initial stages most of them are going to be using the cameras in their cell phones.
