I've not been spot metering.  All shooting is in manual mode with a fixed lighting 
distance and visual evaluation on-screen.  And that last part seems to be the 
biggest issue.  This Samsung display is one of the few flat screens that I've used 
which as a clarity similar to a good tube.  (My favorite being an old 19" SGI.) 
 The average LCD seems to be the weak link for which I need to compensate.

in the case of these very dark metal parts, you might want to use a curve that increases the dynamic range at the dark end; the result might not be literal, but it will be easier to take in
