Paul, Thanks for giving a little more clarification. To my understanding, shutter lag is the time between when you have mechanically/electronically activated the shutter and the shutter actually opens. What you have described is the travel and play/slop in the shutter button itself.
I suppose one becomes used to a certain feel. One of my old MX's ended up with such a hair trigger (no play at all) that I would accidentally fire it - happened fairly often. I didn't like that. A little play is good in my book - no play or alot of play is not so good. I can say that the amount of play in my 2 MZ-S's have not caused me to notice either way. Seems about right for my tastes. I haven't noticed any real problems with missed timing. I suspect that if you use a particular piece of equipment consistently, you become accustomed to it's nuances. That is why I am a strong advocate of multiple bodies being the same. It gives you opportunity to become so familiar that the camera is second nature to you and you cease to have to conciously think about it.
