well, if you look at the "tradition" i was trying to point out, while the number on the dial seems to literally mean attenuation in the case of my receiver, it's clearly something else in the case of Rick's; the reference point and the direction are different, but what is consistent is that effective relative _volume_ is being _indicated_ in dB; so i think my use of the term "indicating" is accurate whether or not actual spl (sound pressure level) is in direct proportion to these values
