I think the main issue for most is that we were hoping for something
perceptibly above a K-5, i.e., a new flagship, or barring that, a
mirror-less body that still had some significant compelling features
above a K-5. That does not seem to have happened.

It is widely rumored that a DSLR will be announced at CP+ next week,
and there's other rumors of announcements later in the year. Like you,
I want to see a K-5 successor. The K-01 isn't it, but that doesn't
mean it's not coming.

(If Pentax were pushing hard to drop DSLRs in favor of mirrorless
compacts, would we see a ~550mm lens on the roadmap? That doesn't seem
like a good match to me...)

The K-01 doesn't seem as ugly to me as some have indicated. But for my personal ergonomics and the kind of photography I'm interested in, the lack of an eye-level viewfinder makes it unusable.

I just can't accomplish what I want to with a "hold-it-out-at-arms-length-and-look-at-the-TV-screen-on-the-back" camera. I don't think there's anything "wrong" with the K-01, but it's not the camera I need or want.
