Wonderful photo! My folks used to live near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and a local fisherman seeing the diminishing cod stocks tried to make a buck taking tourists out on whale watching trips. I went out at least four times in successive years.
The first two times there was nothing. The third year he found a fishing fleet throwing out chum (bait to attract fish into the the nets they laid). The chum also attracted cavorting porpoises, finback whales, and most spectacularly, humpbacks. There were dozens of them and we got up quite close. Saw lots of tails just like in your wonderful photo. We were beyond sight of land, so we didn't have the gorgeous background as in your photo. The fourth year I went out there was nary a whale, just a bunch of harbour seals (he knew of a rock where they sunned so he'd always go past there on the way back home, sort of a consolation prize, along with his usual "sorry we can't know where the whales are in the big sea," speech. The worst part of it was the year we did get lucky I didn't have a camera. :-( Great shot!
