I'm responding to this since I inquired about this technique a few months
back. Since then I finally just broke down and purchased a monolight. I
bought the "Beginner Bee" package from alienbees.com and all I can say is
Very Cool!

I took an informal class on portrait photography at UT and we were able to
use a studio light one night. Well, this sort of just pushed me over the
edge and commit to purchasing a studio light.

At this point I have the AlienBee light with a shoot through umbrella, a
silver umbrella and a photoflex softbox. I was a little worried about not
getting the larger light but this has not been an issue. I've actually had
to put the light down to 1/2 or 1/4 power to not blow out some of the shots
w/the Softbox.

So, if you can afford even the smaller light ($199) I'd recommend giving it
a shot.

I would scan some of the test shots that I took this week but I've done
everything in 120 and do not have a transparency scanner for that format.
Guess a medium format scanner is on the list now.

When will it end?!?

Well, thanks for listening.

A little poorer but better lit Delano

P.S. - I did have to get a flash meter so I guess that is another thing to
factor in on this type of decision.
