I have very dim memories as a kid in Montreal of riding on the trams (as they called them there). Somewhere around 1960 they ripped them up.
Toronto is one of the rare North American cities that resisted the urge to "modernize". I type this post on my mobile heading into town on the Queen Street car! :-) Our rolling stock is hopelessly outdated now but later this year we start taking delivery of new Bombardier streetcars. At one stage Sydney had one of the largest tram networks in the world but in the 1950s the politicians decided that buses were the future and ripped the entire system up.
