Actually in the US millions of illegal aliens cross the southern boarder
each year. If they're caught in the act, they're deported, to a place
where they can buy a bus ticket to a location from which they can try
again. Once beyond the boarder zone, it's "politically incorrect" to
even question their status, even after law enforcement has arrested them
for some pretty serious crimes. On the other hand If you're here
legally, and commit a crime you'll be punished pretty severely by the
standards of the US. Taken as a totality it seems particularly stupid
that a Canadian trying to enter legally should be denied entry.

Most of us have missed the point. Our Canadian friend said he had no

Every country has a minimum requirement to be let in on arrival at an
airport or pre apply for a Visa.
I am from Bangalore, India, and have never had a problem at any
airport in the US or Canada, even on multiple entries to and fro US -
Canada or vice vera.
Last August we were in Europe and the UK for a month and enjoyed our
travels without any let or hindrance.

Don't lose heart! They might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthily search.
