This has been a mercifully mild winter for the outoor-dwellers. Still we've had
a few nights where the temperature bottomed out near -20C. And when a sleeping
bag gets wet, hypothermia can set in at much higher temps.

You're right, this guy is above a steam vent, but it must still be a damned
cold place to sleep.

Toronto has a steam heating system in the core, and every so often there's a
leak and warm air and water vapor pours out of sidewalk grates. Inevitably a
homeless person sets up camp there. Within a day or two workers fix the leak. I
know they're doing their job and saving money and everything, but I always feel
bad for that homeless person who loses a warm sleeping place.

I think many of these people sleep during the day and wander the streets and
hang out in all-night coffee shops when the temps are colder at night.

Thanks for the comment.

Cheers,
frank

That image tells a strong story, Frank. The homeless have it tough
everywhere, but in the climate of Toronto, it must be brutal.

There is little snow around his blanket; is there a subway vent or
some other source of heat that made him choose this location>
