I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of those that sleep outdoors in winter are suffering from a major mental illness, severe addictions or both. There are obviously far fewer outdoor dwellers in the winter than the summer. Shelters can be pretty horrible places, but given the choice between a shelter and freezing to death...
Certainly during summer one sees lots of youth "camping out". Hard to say if it's all a lark or if at least some of them suffer addictions, mental illness or are escaping from abusive situations. Sorry to hear of your bad experience, Larry. Sounds like a hellish end to the marriage from hell. When you see someone homeless in a Toronto winter, you can be pretty sure that it's not because they thought it would be fun. One aspect of living in Santa Cruz is the number of homeless who are just kids camping out because it's more fun to smoke dope and camp in the woods than it is to go to school, get a job whatever. Something that I didn't truly appreciate until my ex-wife moved a tribe of homeless kids into my house while we were separated. Cleaning up after I got them out of the house was an interesting chapter in my life. As far as I can tell, it was one of them, or one of their friends that broke in and stole the Pentax gear that I got from my father. I still miss the Series 1 70-210, though as much as I miss the fire agate ring made by my father that was my college graduation present. -- Larry Colen [email protected] (from dos4est) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
