They're very cool. :-)

But they're mostly happy accidents when done with film. Done with
digital compositing, you can get consistent and predictable results to
match a particular vision.

There are times when the randomness of the happy accident are what you want.
There are times when you need to produce something specific, for
whatever reason, and you need to find a way to do that consistently or
reliably.

It's all in what your goals on and what you need to do.
