Building a DIY pack from e.g. D sized cells (5000 Ah capacity) is easy, and you have about 3-5x more capacity than normal NiMH AAs. 2) get NiCd instead of your NiMHs. They have lower capacity and are unfriendly to the earth more than MHs, but they have inherently better recycle times AND better performance in cold temperatures.
