There must have been a similar craze here at some stage because a number of towns have monuments like that. Rakaia is just the closest to where I am :) The fish has been there for as long as I remember. Recently a new attraction, Salmon World, was built nearby. The building itself is in the shape of a fish but you can only see this from the air. Despite the name they also have two varieties of trout on display.
