What I've just noticed since John's comments is that the search
settings icon (the little cog) has disappeared from a newly opened
search page. I can't recall if it's been long gone or has only just
gone missing. But never fear. Have patience and allow a search to
complete. The results page will have the settings icon just where you
expect it to be. Then you can configure it to your heart's content
and live Googly ever after.
