It appears that Adobe has done something odd or even stupid to the support for hierarchical keywords in LR 4. In earlier versions, one could mix and match various options to tailor which keywords got exported with an image file. In v4, some of these have been switched off. Alledgedly for "privacy reasons".
Personally I think this (insert expression for assimilation of gas, dust or liquid through eg. a narrow tube). The implementation in v3 was not perfect, but this is a real step backwards IMHO. The current conundrum renders use of controlled vocabularies next to impossible, just beside wildly impractical. :-( okay, rant mode off.
