I believe you are seeing something that has always been possible with that lens, but if you haven't seen it before now then you just haven't been shooting it with the right combination of aperture, focal length, and light condition. This is the famous center spot that is due to the completely FLAT rear lens element. (Check your lens, I'll bet it is completely flat). Then google it.
