Thanks, JC.
Yeah, that occurred to me a few minutes ago, given the results I've
sometimes gotten from Walmart. I've had photos printed there that
bore only the slightest resemblance to the ones I uploaded, and I
suppose that could happen just about anywhere you get them.
Given that I'm on the other side of the globe, I can't help directly
with your problem but maybe my method will help.
I don't do my own prints. I found a professional lab in Melbourne
(I'm in Sydney) who does good work. I upload processed images to
their website and order 6 x 4 'proofs'. I get them back by express
post in a couple of days. I examine the proofs, tweak the original
files to lighten/darken them if necessary and then order the larger
versions. Occasionally I'll do a second 'proof' just to be sure the
colour is as I want it.
If I was doing a lot of prints, this could turn out to be an expensive
method. But I don't and it's worked well so far. However, now that
printers are becoming more 'affordable', I may start saving a few
pennies to get my own printer (that is, after I upgrade my DSLR....)
That does sound like a good idea given that 4x6's are just a few pennies
per print. I guess there's really no huge rush in getting prints out to
people who want them, so an extra week or two probably wouldn't hurt if
it means making sure they get a good print for their money -- which
ain't gonna be a whole lot, anyway.
Thanks for the idea!
