Do you know how many $100's of rebates I lost in the last 10 years? They're a way of making the customer spend money thinking they got a good price, all the while hoping they forget to redeem the rebate in time. That trick works well on me, especially if I'm travelling and have little time to pay attention. Rebates that are redeemed at checkout time are fine. Many rebates also seem to have a condition that makes me purchase something I didn't really want in addition to my main purchase in order to get the rebate, and I don't do that.
