Richard Dawkins coined the term in The Selfish Gene, not to explain the internet but to use as a term for ideas that take hold in people's heads and spread whether they have any real merit or not, ability to survive and replicate being the only measure of success. 'Meme' is a meme; popular songs; religion; stupid bad-Latin plurals like statii and virii. The idea is supposed to demonstrate that self-replicators don't have to be physical like genes. The word is derived from the suffix -eme which is used in linguistics to denote a smallest unit of something, like morpheme and phoneme. I can't remember what the m- is for.
