I've been reading a book on the (American) civil war and last night
noticed a photograph of Ulysses S. Grand taken in a studio with one of
those head clamps in the background. I'm guessing the emulsion the
photographer was using was sensitive enough not to require the use of
such a device but that they were still common in studios at the time.
