It is written about in photo magazines and you can talk to people inside the various manufacturers organizations. All camera manufacturers lost money last year except Canon. It's well known that the least profitable market segment is 35mm slrs. The entry level camera stand for 80-90% of the volume of slr's sold. If there was lot of money in upper end 35mm slr you can bet that Nikon and Canon would not have be left alone. The other companies specializing on more expensive bodies struggles (Leica and Contax).
