Where did you purchase the camera? They're required to make it good.

There's a thing called a "Warranty of Merchantability", which means that unless the camera was specifically sold "as is" or "defective", you can use it for its intended purpose, i.e. as a camera.

If you cannot, the vendor must either replace it with a functional camera or refund your money.

Can't. It refuses to format a card that it thinks is write protected.
But it would read the firmware update.
