I think that if people can get away with shooting weddings and formals digitally, then you can most certainly get away with shooting 35mm film. Shoot fine grained, high resolution film (like NPS, one of my faves), and you'll have no problem with good 11x14s, provided your technique is good and your lenses are decent. Use a tripod.
I know some photographers who shoot weddings in a photojournalist style and who shoot ONLY 35mm.
