Well, now the Army claims it is 237 years old, but that is a recent
fabrication to disguise the fact that the Marine Corps is older than
the US Army. <G>
The Continental Army was formed 237 years ago today. It was, however,
disbanded in 1783, while the Marine Corps (created Nov 10, 1775),
continued in operation aboard naval vessels. The US Army was in fact
not established until June 3, 1784.
So, have fun with your cup cakes; We Marines will use a Mameluke
Sword (commemorating the Shores of Tripoli) to cut our 237th birthday
(for real) cake on Nov 10. (GBG)

It's also the 237th "birthday" of the United States Army.
Well, for what it's worth, the "oldest" U.S. military unit is part of
the Massachusetts Army National Guard, and can trace its lineage to the
Massachusetts Bay Colony Militia founded December 13, 1636. There are,
as well, extant Massachusetts Army National Guard units in a direct line
of descent from the Minute Men at Lexington and Concord.
Thirty units in the U.S. Army have roots back in the colonial era, 29 of
them are in the Army National Guard, with a NJ ARNG unit among them.

The one I find most intriguing is the 269th Infantry PR ARNG, who
started out as a SPANISH colonial militia. It could arguably trace it's
lineage back to 1510 and a militia founded by Ponce de León. However, it
didn't become a U.S. unit until 1898.
When we mobilized for Iraq in 2003, 1/150th Cav WV ARNG was one of our
assigned units. And one the units we supported for the deployment
(detached in theater) was 2/108 IN from the NY Army National Guard, aka
The Rough Riders.
