Steve,
From the manual it looks like the AF140C has a bayonet coupling between the
flash and the adapter rings. See page 6 in the manual. If that is correct,
you have to have at least one dedicated adapter ring to make stepdown rings
work. I have never seen these adapters sold separately, but I believe they
are the same size as the adapters for the current AF160C ring flash.
What lenses do you plan to use it with?

Subject: will a normal step-down ring work with Pentax AF140c?
i've long felt i should grapple with flash, especially for the macro shots
i take, so i've just acquired an inexpensive AF140C ring flash; i don't
have it in hand yet, but it comes without the adapter rings normally
packaged, so i'm trying to sort out what i'll need; i have found the
manual for the flash online, and several threads discussing it, but not
enough info to be sure what will substitute for the different theaded
adapters
to adapt it to a 58mm filter thread lens will i just need a 58mm male to
49mm female adapter? am i going to have clearance trouble?
i know i won't get any automation on the exposure, and may have to
attenuate the flash physically, but any tips on working with this flash
and Pentax DSLR?
thx
