LR4 supports a newer process version than older versions of Lr so even
the edit parameters will not make sense to an older version. Your
renderings will shift if you change the process version to be
compatible with what's available in your friend's version, but you
could do that, edit to suit, and then export as DNG with finished
renderings. Your friend can then re-import the files and the settings
will be imported too, but not the edit history.

The most sensible thing to do is to have them update to the latest
version, same as yours, and then just hand over a catalog file. The
catalog file can then be imported.
