it's not just you. I just looked the word up in my French dictionary and was
rather surprised to find it there, but disappointed that it's not a
French-French word. It just says 'in Canada, a mix of chips and grated
cheese with hot sauce', and there are no similar words that have any obvious
etymological connection.
