So, I took the K20D with the Promaster 70-300 out this morning to
work on my manual focusing skills, and happened to catch this out of
the corner of my eye -- thinking it was a hummingbird. The thing is
pretty damned sizable.

If it's some kind of bee, it's not like any I've ever seen before.
But, I'm sure some PDML'er will be able to inform me.
It's a hummingbird moth. They're about the size of a bumble-bee.
I don't know the scientific name.
