Interesting turn of phrase.  I've always heard it as "close but no cigar", with 
the understanding that if you won at the carnival the prize was a cigar.

Isn't there a way to adjust the color balance of shadows in lightroom?

I think that your rework looks a lot better.

How would the photo work in black and white?  Or even just slightly desaturated?
