have you tried clearing dust out from the cooling vents? you can use something like a Giottos Rocket or a vacuum that doubles as a blower; this could let it cool itself more efficiently, and is a good practice even if it doesn't solve this particular problem
also, it sounds like you've got it well correlated to the monitor's brightness setting, but perhaps that's coincidental and there's a heat-related problem with the video card in your computer; in other words, check your computer for dust too
