Larry, It's a very nice shot, both technically (DOF, focus, exposure, light, ..) and emotionally (you've caught a great moment). The instrument being out of focus is nice, and its lines lead the eyes to face.
One thing that bothers me is that the chin is cut off. For the second shot, it's a good snapshot, but it does not work for me as a "big photo". I think that comes from both the composition and too many highlights on the face. IMHO, the other shot of hers (20120913-LRC71808.jpg) is much better, even though I'd try to crop it to a square... or, maybe not..
