Darren, you are probably correct.
As for what Google may want them for, - I think it is for the
(tra-tram!) the magic filters (marketing importance of which we recently
discussed in another thread) in their on-line photo-editing tools.
Think of 1) chromebooks where all things are essentially done online;
and 2) picasa (again, mostly online).

That's my guess.
