I'm using a combination of freeware downloads, fiddling and fine-tuning until things look more normal.

The reason I mentioned proper distance is because one of the tutorials I read said that you should step back from the monitor about 7 feet and look at it from a distance. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, and I can't imagine why it would make any difference unless you're in an office environment and need the monitor tilted to accommodate co-workers and such. In any event, the room I use is only about the size of a drunk tank, and my computer desk is a fairly sizable beast. I'm not going to worry about that part of it.

Proper distance? For a Spyder, Huey, i1, etc. it's 0mm.

What are you using to calibrate?

Thanks, Rick.

I've been working on the calibration thing. One minor issue is that my
computer desk is situated such that in in order to get the proper
distance away from the monitor, I'd have to blast a hole in the opposite
wall.

But, I'm getting as close as I can, and think I have the gamma just
about right. I've toned down the contrast and brightness a bit, too. I'm
still stunned at how much noise my old CRT masked in some of my photos,
and how far off the color temperature seemed to be.

I do believe I'm going to like this monitor quite a bit, though.

Yup, a red tailed hawk.

Make sure you calibrate your spiffy new monitor--from the factory they're
designed to have things bright and punchy. That can make pix look dark and
timid to others, and in prints.

I've been very happy with my Dell U2410 and U2411 (1 at home, 1 at work).

Cheers,

Rick

So, I've got this spiffy new monitor and I'm going through my images to see how they
look, and I'm absolutely stunned at how atrocious some of them are! I'd been using
an old 19" CRT up until now and had no idea they were that awful. It's a wonder
anything I ever shot came out as a decent print. I wish someone had told me a long
time ago. I'm thoroughly embarrassed by some of the photos I thought were fairly
decent.

That said, I also found this shot which I didn't realize I had. I think it's a
Red Tail Hawk, since it's hawk-like in appearance and has a vaguely red tail.

In any event, I'm still a bit mortified by some of the images I've been
publishing under the misapprehension that they're usable photos. Makes me want
to scrap my entire library and start anew!
