Well this sux. My HP B8550 keeps alternately reporting a paper jam then
a carriage jam. This happened in spite of the fact that there was no
paper loaded, and the paper path is seems to be extraordinarily clear of
obstructions. The print head seems to be permanently stuck in the
storage position. If anyone has any experience that might lead to
freeing it I'd really appreciate it. As it is after following the
trouble shooting guide and downloading HP's troubleshooting software,
(which pretty much did nothing more than confirm what I already knew),
I'm left with sending the damned thing to HP for repair. I'm still
hoping to avoid that but it's a fading hope.
For giggles, uninstall the driver, and then download the newest one
and re install it (even if it's the same one)
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it, but I have no real expectation
of that working as the printer has it's own built in card reader/printer
function that allows you t print even if there's no computer attached to
it at all. One of the diagnostic/repair techniques was to disconnect it
from the computer, switch the power on, wait for it to display the jam
message, unplug it from the mains then manually cycle the head to the
opposite end of the carriage. According to the instructions it should
have moved easily. It didn't If I had applied more force I expect I'd
have broken something outright. Still it's worth a try, at this point
anything is.

Don't lose heart, they might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthly search.
