I can't answer your question about third party alternatives, but I have 
experienced the broken zoom mechanism on both of my 540 flashes. I had them 
repaired at a cost of about $150 each, if memory serves me. I use them 
extensively, so I count that as normal wear and tear. Plus, I used them with a 
heavy diffuser hanging on the end (and should have turned off auto zoom). But I 
would be annoyed if I hadn't used the flashes much and they failed. Is your 360 
out of warranty? If so, figure on a somewhat expensive repair.
